The Jocotepec men’s team got off to a strong start in the 2026 Jalisco Cup, defeating Tenamaxtlán 5-0. Even with the big win and a clean sheet at El Empastado (The Grass Field) pitch, the coaching staff remained cautious given the level their opponent displayed.
For head coach Sergio López Llamas, the result on Saturday, March 7, is not a clear sign of how strong his team will be this season. “This team that came — with all due respect — is a new team. There wasn’t much to judge,” López Llamas said. He explained that Jocotepec’s true level will become clear when they face teams with more tournament history.
This year’s roster also has more young players than last season. The coach praised their “heart” and strong desire to succeed, but he also made a firm call for discipline.
Another noticeable factor in the opener was the small crowd in the stands. López Llamas said the lower attendance may be due to the schedule change, since games moved from Sunday to Saturday afternoons. He also invited the community to support the team. “Come to the games and show your support — we’re going to give you some truly memorable moments of joy,” he said.
The next match will be an important test. On Saturday, March 14, Jocotepec will visit Villa Corona, a team that usually qualifies for the tournament’s final stages.
Staying true to his ambitious style, Sergio López ended with a clear message to both critics and supporters: “Sometimes they criticize me, but my only goal is to win the championship. I prefer to think big.”
