In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the fifth annual Chapala Women’s Race took place Sunday morning, March 8. The event brought together more than 500 participants on the town’s boardwalk to run a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course.
The race was organized by the Chapala Government, through the Women’s Institute headed by Alicia Medeles, with the goal of promoting participation, health, and female empowerment, as well as commemorating the struggle and progress that women have achieved in society.
The runners participated in three categories: Youth, for ages 12 to 17; Open, for ages 18 to 49; and Master, for women 50 and older. All participants received a commemorative medal for their effort, while the top three finishers in each category received cash prizes, official recognition, and a commemorative pin.
During the awards ceremony, the president of DIF Chapala, Érika Erin Torres Herrera, and the municipal trustee, Lilia Alvarado Macías, were present and presented the medals and prizes to the winners. Councilwomen and other women from the Chapala Municipal Government also participated in the event.
In her remarks, the president of DIF Chapala highlighted the event’s growth and its importance to the women of the municipality. “This is a testament to what women are capable of achieving. Each one made a tremendous effort to participate. My appreciation goes to the Women’s Institute for organizing this event, as more runners join each year; last year there were 350, and this year we surpassed 500 participants. We hold this commemoration to remember the strength we have together, and that every step taken in this race represents progress toward justice for all. Thank you all for your participation,” she expressed.
With this activity, the Chapala Women’s Race solidifies its position as one of the flagship events within the municipality’s International Women’s Day commemorations, promoting unity, participation, and recognition of the fundamental role of women in society.
