More than 1,500 elementary and middle school students began competing in the Jalisco School Sports Games, a statewide tournament taking place May 4-8. The event brings together top young athletes from across the state.
Students are competing in handball, track and field, volleyball, and chess. The games also include newer sports such as Baseball5—a fast-paced version of baseball—plus three-on-three basketball, and flag football.
Jalisco Education Secretary Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes opened the ceremony at the Arena Coliseo de Guadalajara and welcomed the student delegations.
During his remarks, Flores Miramontes said the end of the school year gives students a chance to show their overall growth. He stressed the importance of physical education alongside academics.
The opening ceremony in Guadalajara also included a flag ceremony and the athletes’ oath. Athletes and judges pledged to follow the rules and uphold the values of fair play.
