The week of Aug. 13-19 brought a familiar late-summer theme: the leaders gave up little ground. Minnesota beat Las Vegas and Golden State to strengthen its hold on the WNBA’s best record, while Milwaukee followed a statement series in Los Angeles with a 22-0 eruption against Seattle. The Mexican Baseball League moved into its Series de Zona, América and Tijuana finished Liga MX Matchday 4 level on points at the top, and four Liga MX Femenil teams stayed perfect. Formula One remained on summer break but still produced a late driver change before the Dutch Grand Prix.

WNBA

Minnesota turned the week’s two biggest measuring-stick games into wins. Olivia Miles scored 23 points with eight assists in a 92-87 victory at Las Vegas on Aug. 15, while Napheesa Collier added 19 points. Four nights later, Miles and Kayla McBride scored 20 apiece and Collier had 18 points and eight rebounds as the Lynx beat Golden State 77-66 to improve to 30-7. Golden State beat Dallas 78-70 on Aug. 17 to clinch a second straight playoff berth behind Gabby Williams’ 23 points. Indiana also won its fifth straight when Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 and Caitlin Clark 24 in a 101-95 victory at Toronto on Aug. 18.

The contender story: Minnesota remains the league’s standard at 30-7. Golden State is second overall at 25-10 and playoff-bound, while Indiana’s five-game surge has kept the Fever among the league’s hottest teams.

MLB

Milwaukee authored the week’s loudest headline and ended it with the majors’ best record. The Brewers closed a four-game set at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 16 with a 6-2 win, taking three of four and securing the season-series tiebreaker. Two nights later, Milwaukee beat Seattle 22-0, tying a franchise record for runs and matching the largest shutout margin of baseball’s modern era. Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, Jake Bauers, and Luis Lara homered. Seattle answered 7-5 on Aug. 19, but Milwaukee still finished the window 78-49. St. Louis rookie Joshua Báez also made history, hitting three home runs in his first big-league game in an 8-4 win over the Cubs on Aug. 15.

The contender story: Milwaukee leads the majors at 78-49, followed by the Dodgers at 77-51. Tampa Bay owns the American League’s best record at 76-50, while Philadelphia reached 70-58 on a six-game winning streak.

Mexican Baseball League

The Liga Mexicana de Béisbol moved from its first playoff round into the Division Series with eight clubs alive. In the North, Toros de Tijuana opened with a 4-0 win over Charros de Jalisco on Aug. 18, while Sultanes de Monterrey beat Caliente de Durango 6-2. Both series were tied a night later after Charros won 5-3 in 11 innings and Caliente erupted for a 17-5 victory without hitting a home run. The South opened Aug. 19 with Pericos de Puebla beating Diablos Rojos del México 13-5 and Guerreros de Oaxaca edging Olmecas de Tabasco 2-1 behind seven scoreless innings from Luis Miranda.

The contender story: The two North series stood 1-1 at the end of Aug. 19. Puebla and Oaxaca held the only series leads, each 1-0 after winning the South’s opening games.

Liga MX

Leagues Cup Phase One closed Aug. 13 with León, América, Toluca, and Monterrey advancing from the Liga MX side. León went 3-0 for nine points, the best Mexican result. Domestic play then resumed with Matchday 4: Monterrey routed FC Juárez 6-1, América beat Atlético de San Luis 3-0, Tijuana defeated Cruz Azul 2-1 behind a goal and an assist from Gilberto Mora, and Atlas beat Tigres 2-1. América finished the round first on goal difference with 10 points, tied with Tijuana; Monterrey and Atlas followed with nine.

The contender story: América has the strongest two-front case, leading Liga MX on goal difference while also advancing in Leagues Cup. Tijuana is tied on 10 points, while Monterrey sits one point back and also remains alive in Leagues Cup.

Liga MX Femenil

Matchday 3 sharpened the early Liga MX Femenil title picture. América rallied to beat Puebla 5-1, Tigres edged FC Juárez 1-0, Guadalajara beat Atlético de San Luis 3-1, and Rayadas won 4-1 at Santos Laguna. Tijuana also routed Necaxa 5-1, Pachuca beat Pumas 3-1, Querétaro won 1-0 at León, and Toluca drew Atlas 1-1. Tigres and Rayadas remained perfect in Group A, with América and Guadalajara perfect in Group B.

Formula One

Formula One did not race during the Aug. 13-19 window, remaining on summer break after the Hungarian Grand Prix and the FIA-mandated two-week factory shutdown. Track activity resumes at Zandvoort on Aug. 21, with the Sprint on Aug. 22 and Dutch Grand Prix on Aug. 23. On Aug. 19, Red Bull announced that Isack Hadjar would miss the weekend because of a wrist injury. Liam Lawson will move up from Racing Bulls to partner with Max Verstappen, with reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda taking Lawson’s seat.

The contender story: Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers with 219 points; Mercedes leads the constructors with 379.
