Toluca won the Leagues Cup, Milwaukee swept rival Chicago and finished the window with baseball’s best record, and the Mexican Baseball League opened a Serie del Rey that split its first two games. América and Tigres stayed perfect in Liga MX Femenil, while the WNBA remained on its FIBA Women’s World Cup pause with its eight-team playoff field already set. At Monza, Kimi Antonelli drove from 19th to first and strengthened his grip on the Formula One championship.
WNBA
The WNBA played no league games during the Sept. 3-9 window as its 16-day pause for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup continued through Sept. 16. That leaves every team with four regular-season games remaining when play resumes Sept. 17, but the postseason field itself is settled: Minnesota, Golden State, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Indiana, New York, Washington, and Dallas have secured the eight playoff places. Minnesota enters the final stretch at 31-9, two games ahead of Golden State at 29-11, with Las Vegas third at 27-13. Atlanta and Indiana are both 26-14, while New York, Washington, and Dallas make up the rest of the playoff field.
The Contender Story: Minnesota’s head-to-head tiebreaker means Golden State effectively needs to gain three games on the Lynx over the final four to steal the No. 1 seed. The more fluid race is below them, where home-court advantage and the Nos. 6-8 seeds can still shift quickly after play resumes.
MLB
Milwaukee used its final regular-season series against the Cubs to make the National League Central look increasingly settled. The Brewers swept three games at home, winning 4-3 on Monday, 4-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday, and 8-6 on Wednesday to finish the window 91-56 and 10 games ahead of Chicago. Their division magic number fell to five, although they had not yet clinched a postseason berth by Wednesday night. The Dodgers answered with a 14-1 rout of Cincinnati on Wednesday for a seventh straight win and an 89-57 record, while Tampa Bay held the American League’s best mark at 87-58. In Philadelphia, Houston’s Jose Altuve doubled for his 2,500th career hit, joining Freddie Freeman as the only other active player to reach the milestone, though the Astros lost 11-7.
The Contender Story: Milwaukee’s 10-game cushion in the NL Central gives it something the Dodgers and several other contenders do not have: room to line up its rotation and protect key arms for October. The Brewers still have to finish the job, but their margin creates a strategic advantage as the postseason approaches.
Mexican Baseball League
The Liga Mexicana de Béisbol moved from its two-zone championships directly into the Serie del Rey League Championship series, with Olmecas de Tabasco facing Toros de Tijuana for the title. Tabasco struck first Tuesday at Toros Mobil Park, beating Tijuana 7-1 behind a pitching staff that kept the Toros quiet most of the night. Tijuana answered Wednesday emphatically, piling up 18 hits and four home runs in a 13-2 victory. A 10-run fifth inning, highlighted by Franchy Cordero’s grand slam, turned Game 2 into a rout and sent the best-of-seven series to Tabasco tied 1-1.
The Contender Story: The opening two games produced opposite scripts, which makes the move to Villahermosa especially important. Tabasco now has three home games at the series level, while Tijuana has already shown it can erase momentum in a hurry with one explosive inning.
Liga MX
Toluca supplied the week’s biggest Liga MX result by beating Monterrey 2-0 in Sunday’s Leagues Cup final in Houston. Alexis Vega scored in the fourth minute, Helinho added the second in the 70th, and Toluca claimed its first Leagues Cup championship along with a direct place in the round of 16 of the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. Domestic Matchday 7 was only partially played because four matches were rescheduled around Leagues Cup obligations. Chivas won 3-0 at Atlético de San Luis, Pachuca beat FC Juárez 2-0, Cruz Azul edged Santos Laguna 1-0, and both Tigres-Necaxa and Atlas-Atlante finished 1-1. América stayed atop the Apertura standings with 16 points, followed by Chivas with 14 and Toluca, Tijuana, and Atlas with 13 each.
The Contender Story: América still controls the league race, but Toluca’s trophy run and Chivas’ climb have created two different kinds of pressure: one from a champion carrying momentum and one from a rival steadily banking league points.
Liga MX Femenil
América and Tigres kept matching each other win for win in Matchday 6. América beat Pumas 2-1 behind a Geyse Ferreira double, while Tigres shut out Santos Laguna 3-0, leaving both clubs perfect at 6-0 with 18 points. América holds the overall lead on goal difference after scoring 30 goals and allowing only three; Tigres has scored 19 and conceded just one. Rayadas remained the closest pursuer at 15 points after a 5-1 win over Toluca, and Chivas stayed in the chase by routing Atlas 4-0. Geyse’s two goals against Pumas lifted her league-leading total to 11 through six matches.
The Contender Story: América’s attack and Tigres’ defense have produced identical perfect records by very different routes. Their separation from the field is still small enough for Rayadas to matter, but the early title picture increasingly looks like a test of whether anyone can disrupt those two contrasting strengths.
Formula One
Kimi Antonelli produced the drive of the week at the Italian Grand Prix, recovering from 19th on the grid after a power-unit penalty to win at Monza. The Mercedes driver charged through the field, used a mid-race Virtual Safety Car to make a well-timed stop, and passed teammate George Russell late to take his seventh Grand Prix victory of the season. Russell finished second, 3.857 seconds behind, and Max Verstappen was third. Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza since 1966. He now leads the drivers’ standings with 267 points, ahead of Russell at 201 and Lewis Hamilton at 191. Mercedes leads the constructors with 468 points, followed by Ferrari at 346 and McLaren at 287.
The Contender Story: Antonelli’s Monza win was more damaging to his rivals than an ordinary 25-point day because he started 19th while Russell began near the front. Mercedes turned a weekend that looked vulnerable into a 1-2, and that ability to recover when circumstances go wrong is becoming the defining edge in both championships.
