Jalisco has the dubious distinction of being the state with the most dengue cases in Mexico so far in 2025, with 787 confirmed infections as of June 12. In response, Jalisco Health Secretary Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez announced at a June 17 press conference that “there was an increase of approximately 30% over 2024 in the resources allocated to dengue prevention.” The highest concentration of cases has been in Autlán, Puerto Vallarta, Ameca and Zapopan, where climatic conditions favor the proliferation of the mosquito that transmits the disease. In response to the increase in infections, the Jalisco Ministry of Health has intensified the 2025 State Strategy Against Dengue, focused on integrated vector management (i.e., reducing mosquitoes breeding and accessing humans), epidemiological surveillance, and home brigades to eliminate opportunities for mosquitoes to reproduce. Some 310 million pesos (around 15 million USD) have been allocated to strengthen prevention efforts, including fumigations in high-risk areas and infection awareness campaigns in schools and public spaces. Despite the increase in confirmed cases, authorities emphasize that no deaths have been reported in the state during 2025. However, they urge the population to continue preventive measures such as eliminating containers with standing water where mosquitoes may breed, applying insect repellent, and placing screens on doors and windows. The Health Secretary also announced actions to address this surge in cases in the state, specifically “an increase in vehicles and an upgrade of the fleet that transports the equipment for fumigation, for fogging, especially in public spaces, and to transport our brigades throughout the state, to the 125 municipalities, for those tasks that are also carried out in homes.” He also recommended increases in the amount and quality of insecticides as well as cooperation among the state’s municipalities. In this regard, Pérez Gómez detailed on social media, “One of the most important actions is the deployment of brigades that are already touring different neighborhoods in the state to eliminate breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever.” These brigades are made up of trained and properly identified personnel who perform tasks such as yard and rooftop inspections, applying larvicide to water tanks; providing public guidance on prevention measures; and detecting and eliminating potential breeding sites.
