The 6 Esquinas (Six Corners) tree is not to be cut down but rehabilitated, according to Chapala President Aguirre Curiel. The president announced the reprieve after the publication of the first video reporting the damage to the tree, stating that it had been approved to be cut down due to the Ecology, Parks and Gardens and Civil Protection report, but he rescinded the order. Aguirre Curiel told Semanario Laguna, “This tree is emblematic, not only for the Six Corners but also for the municipality. It is one of the trees we must take care of, saved and defended. Unfortunately, it is in trouble, but we have already begun to take measures.” A report has already been made in the municipality in collaboration with employees of the Ecology, Parks and Gardens and Civil Protection departments. Aguirre Curiel said that he asked for the support of experts from the University of Guadalajara so that they could lend their support in rescuing this Indian Laurel. Although the experts they are looking to bring in have yet to submit a report or study, the tree has already been pruned, and a chain has been placed on it, according to the Ecology Department through Social Communication, as a preventive measure, something that the president also reported. Aguirre Curiel said, “A chain is wrapped around it so that it does not continue to open, and responsible pruning has already been done so that the air does not continue to pull it because it has a hole in the center. We have already asked for help from the UDG to check the tree and see how we can take care of it, but at first, they told us that the pruning and the clasp were important.” A rumor spread that the tree would be felled due to the video posted on the Facebook page Gobierno de Chapala, . However, so far, only pruning has been done, which, according to theDepartment of SocialComunicación, both pruning and chain are the only measures that will be taken until the tree is examined by experts and they have submitted their evaluation. “What are we going to do? We are going to save it, that is important,” Aguirre said. Local residents say the 80 to 90-year-old tree remains standing despite damage and rumors of demolition.
