The Lakeside News Sports team is finalizing its plans for World Cup coverage.  We have applied for press credentials for the Guadalajara games to provide you with pitchside seats, and are now scheduling the stories you will receive every week in print and at lakesidenewschapala.com

A highlight of the coverage will be Soccer 101: World Cup Prep, a five-part series that explains the rules, teams, and crazy fans of the world’s most popular sport, which is a veritable religion in Mexico.

We will begin this week with the first installment, The 90 Minute War – a guide to the World Cup clock, and in the following weeks will feature The Geometry of the Pitch – an explanation of the field and its markings, The Insiders’ Lexicon – what all those words and rules mean, Faces of the Home Team – who the stars are and why fans go berserk when they are on the pitch, and Crossing Borders – Mexican players in teams around the world, plus the Host Cities, Venues and Key Dates.

Of course, we will cover the matches and let you know instantly online who won, who lost, and what that means in the bracket.  Of course, we will keep a close eye on Mexico’s team, as well as the U.S. and Canada. There will be sidebars on interesting aspects of the Cup, including this week’s story about the astronomical charges for World Cup tickets and why they are pricing Mexicans out of games in their own country.

Our coverage starts this week with Looking at Life in Mexico, which will explore why fútbol is such a religion in Mexico. So stay tuned for the “Beautiful Game.”
