Milwaukee and Tampa Bay claimed pennants to set a World Series between franchises still seeking their first championship, while Atlanta took a 2-1 lead in the WNBA Finals. The NBA opened with statement wins from Detroit, Philadelphia, and Oklahoma City before several Wednesday routs. América widened its Liga MX lead, Rayadas and América stayed atop the women’s groups, Formula One arrived in Austin with Kimi Antonelli on the brink of a title, San Francisco stayed perfect in the NFL, five Champions League clubs reached 3-0, and Carolina held the early NHL points lead.

WNBA

The WNBA Finals swung toward Atlanta after Golden State opened the series with a 68-64 win Saturday. The Dream answered 79-65 Monday as Angel Reese produced 30 points and 16 rebounds, then returned home Wednesday and routed the Valkyries 97-71. Reese added 21 points and 12 rebounds in Game 3, giving her a double-double in each Finals game, while Rhyne Howard scored 16. Atlanta leads the best-of-seven series 2-1 and hosts Game 4 Saturday.

The Contender Story: The series has shifted from Golden State’s late-game poise to Atlanta’s interior control. Reese is forcing the Valkyries to defend the paint and the glass on every possession, and the Dream now have another home game before the series can return to San Francisco.

NBA

The NBA regular season opened Tuesday with three immediate statements. Detroit erased a 22-point deficit to beat Boston 121-113, Philadelphia spoiled the defending champion Knicks’ banner night with a 106-100 win behind Tyrese Maxey’s 28 points, and Oklahoma City beat San Antonio 116-104 as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32. Wednesday brought more separation: Anthony Edwards scored 45 as Minnesota beat Miami 131-106, Toronto routed Chicago 135-92 in Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Raptors, and the Lakers beat Golden State 127-105 as Walker Kessler scored 26 points on 12-for-12 shooting in his Los Angeles debut.

The Contender Story: One game is too early to build a hierarchy, but the opening nights revealed more than records. Philadelphia’s new stars shared the ball effectively, Detroit’s depth erased a huge deficit, Oklahoma City’s defense looked ready immediately, and the Lakers showed how much a true interior target can change Luka Dončić’s offense.

MLB

Milwaukee completed a four-game National League Championship Series sweep of Los Angeles on Thursday, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to win 6-4 and reach the World Series for the first time since 1982. Jake Bauers, who drove in six runs in the series, was named NLCS MVP. Tampa Bay joined the Brewers on Monday by beating Cleveland 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. Freddy Peralta allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings and finished the ALCS with a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings to earn series MVP honors. Game 1 of the World Series is Friday in Milwaukee, and one of the two franchises will win its first championship.

The Contender Story: Milwaukee enters with home-field advantage after seven full days without a game, making freshness versus rust the first question. Tampa Bay has the shorter layoff and arrives with the rhythm of a six-game series, plus a pitching staff that has repeatedly shortened games for its offense.

Liga MX

América turned two road matches into 10 goals and a firmer hold on first place. The Águilas beat León 5-3 Saturday, then overwhelmed Atlas 5-2 Wednesday to reach 27 points. Guadalajara drew Tigres 1-1 before beating Necaxa 1-0 Tuesday to move to 23, while Cruz Azul followed a 5-0 rout of Juárez with a 2-1 victory at Pachuca to also reach 23. Toluca drew twice during the window and sits on 22 after Wednesday’s 2-2 result against Tijuana. América leads by four points and still has a postponed match against Tijuana to make up.

The Contender Story: América has created both a points cushion and a scheduling cushion. Guadalajara and Cruz Azul are close enough to apply pressure, but neither can afford many dropped points while the leader still owns a match in hand; Toluca’s five-match winless run has made its position more fragile.

Liga MX Femenil

Monterrey stayed atop Group A and the overall standings with a 1-0 win over Cruz Azul to reach 30 points, while Tigres beat Querétaro 2-0 to move to 28 ahead of Sunday’s Clásico Regio. In Group B, América defeated Pachuca 2-1 and also reached 28 points. Geyse scored again for América, extending her scoring streak to 12 consecutive matches—11 in this Apertura phase—and raising her tournament total to 17. Guadalajara kept the pressure on with a 7-0 rout of Necaxa Tuesday and stands second in Group B with 24 points.

The Contender Story: The next round offers a direct test at the top of Group A when Rayadas visit Tigres. América’s four-point Group B cushion gives it more room, but Guadalajara’s seven-goal response showed that the chase is not settled.

Formula One

Formula One had no race this week following the Singapore Grand Prix, but the championship arrives in Austin with a possible clinching scenario. Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship with 340 points, 102 ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell. Mercedes leads the Constructors’ Championship with 578 points, ahead of Ferrari on 444. The United States Grand Prix runs Friday through Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas, and Antonelli can secure his first world title in Austin if he wins and gains at least 23 points on Russell, 14 on Lewis Hamilton, and six on Max Verstappen.

The Contender Story: The burden has shifted almost entirely to Antonelli’s pursuers. They no longer need merely to beat him on a Sunday; they need a large enough swing to keep the championship mathematically alive beyond Austin.

NFL

San Francisco stayed perfect Monday night, beating Washington 23-17 to improve to 6-0. Kansas City remained unbeaten at 5-0 with a 22-6 win over the Chargers as Kenneth Walker III ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Buffalo moved to 5-1 by beating Las Vegas 33-30 behind Josh Allen’s 255 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Chicago improved to 4-2 with a 31-23 win over Atlanta as Caleb Williams completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards in his return from a hamstring injury. Minnesota remained 5-0 during its bye week.

The Contender Story: San Francisco, Kansas City, and Minnesota remain the league’s only unbeaten teams, but their paths look different. The 49ers keep controlling long stretches of games, the Chiefs have added a punishing run game, and the Vikings have banked an undefeated start without exposing themselves to Week 6 attrition.

UEFA Champions League

Matchday 3 produced another high-scoring two-day slate. Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 Tuesday, Liverpool edged Villarreal 4-3, and Manchester City routed AEK Athens 5-1. On Wednesday, Como stunned Manchester United 4-1, Real Madrid beat Leipzig 4-1, Aston Villa defeated Viking 3-1, and Bayern Munich drew Arsenal 2-2. PSG and Liverpool are 3-0, and Aston Villa, Real Madrid, and Real Betis also finished the round with three wins from three.

The Contender Story: The perfect starts now matter because the league phase has begun to separate teams that can absorb one poor night from those already chasing the cut line. PSG and Liverpool have paired results with scoring power, while Real Madrid, Aston Villa, and Betis have built the same nine-point cushion in different ways.

NHL

Carolina kept the NHL’s early points lead by beating Vancouver 6-3 Tuesday, with Nicolas Deslauriers, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Logan Stankoven each scoring two goals. The Hurricanes finished that game 8-2-1 and had won eight of nine. Edmonton also stayed hot with a 4-3 overtime win over Minnesota, while Dallas beat Boston 3-2 in overtime on Mikko Rantanen’s hat trick. Wednesday, Ottawa beat Florida 5-1, and rookie Cole Knuble scored his first two NHL goals as Philadelphia defeated Buffalo 3-1 for its third straight victory.

The Contender Story: Carolina has supplied the best combination of points and scoring depth so far, but Edmonton’s one regulation loss and Dallas’ ability to win tight games keep the early hierarchy unsettled. The season is still young enough that streaks matter more as evidence than as separation.
