The week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2 pushed several races toward their next stage. The WNBA reached its World Cup break with Minnesota still on top but Atlanta and Golden State surging; Milwaukee answered a blowout loss by restoring order in the National League Central, and Tijuana became the first Mexican Baseball League club to punch its ticket to the league championship series (Serie del Rey). América stayed unbeaten in Liga MX, América and Tigres remained perfect in Liga MX Femenil, and Formula One turned its attention to Monza, where championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start toward the back of the grid.
WNBA
The league closed its pre-World Cup stretch with several contenders making noise. Atlanta beat league-leading Minnesota 89-81 on Aug. 30 behind three double-doubles: Angel Reese had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her WNBA-record 29th double-double of the season, Allisha Gray finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Jordin Canada had 16 points and 10 assists. Indiana rolled past Connecticut 111-91 on Aug. 28 as Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell scored 34 points apiece; Clark added 12 assists, becoming the first player in league history with consecutive 30-point, 10-assist games, while Mitchell became only the second player to reach 1,000 points in a season. Golden State also closed strongly, beating New York 79-60 and Portland 86-69 before the Aug. 31 start of the FIBA World Cup break.
The Contender Story: Minnesota still controls the race for the No. 1 seed, but its margin has narrowed. Golden State enters the break two games back and on a four-game winning streak, while Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Indiana remain positioned to make the final four-game sprint for home-court advantage matter.
MLB
Milwaukee took a punch and answered it. After the Cubs hammered the Brewers 17-3 on Aug. 31, Milwaukee responded with consecutive wins, including a 9-5 victory Sept. 2 when Jackson Chourio homered, collected four hits, and scored twice. The Brewers finished the window with baseball’s best record at 87-53. Tampa Bay became the first American League club to reach 80 victories on Aug. 28 and remained atop the AL East despite a 10-4 loss to the Mets on Sept. 2. Atlanta won seven straight through Aug. 30 and closed the week with a 9-0 win at Washington in which Ronald Acuña Jr. hit his 200th career home run, becoming the fastest player in MLB history to reach 200 homers and 200 stolen bases.
The Contender Story: Milwaukee is building the kind of cushion that changes September strategy: protect the rotation, keep the bullpen fresh, and force everyone else to chase. Atlanta has become the National League club applying the most consistent pressure, while the Dodgers’ six losses in eight games have made their path less comfortable. Tampa Bay remains the American League pace-setter, giving the postseason picture a fourth heavyweight.
Mexican Baseball League
Toros de Tijuana became the first team to earn a spot in the Serie del Rey, closing out Sultanes de Monterrey 10-1 on Sept. 2 to win the North Division championship series 4-1. Hernán Pérez hit a first-inning grand slam for the second consecutive night after also going deep with the bases loaded in Tijuana’s 15-7 Game 4 victory. The Toros had taken control with a 6-5 win in 11 innings in Game 3. In the South Division, Olmecas de Tabasco moved ahead of Pericos de Puebla 2-1 by winning Game 3, 6-5, on Sept. 2 after the clubs split the first two games.
The Contender Story: Tijuana has removed all uncertainty from the North and can now set its pitching for the Serie del Rey. The South remains far less settled: Tabasco owns the edge, but Puebla is still one win from leveling a series that has already changed character from game to game.
Liga MX
América kept its unbeaten start intact with a 2-0 win over Puebla in Matchday 6 and finished the round alone in first with 16 points. Toluca climbed into second by routing FC Juárez 4-0, while Tijuana beat Pumas 2-0 behind two Gilberto Mora penalty kicks to join Toluca at 13 points. Querétaro delivered one of the weekend’s surprises with a 3-1 victory at Atlas, and Atlético de San Luis earned its first win of the tournament by beating Monterrey 3-1 at the Estadio BBVA. Juárez, meanwhile, fell to 0-6.
The Contender Story: América is separating itself not only with points but with control: five wins, one draw, and only two goals allowed through six matches. Toluca and Tijuana are the nearest challengers, but the bigger question is whether either can match América’s week-to-week consistency rather than simply stay close in the table.
Liga MX Femenil
América and Tigres extended perfect starts in Matchday 5. América beat Tijuana 3-1 on Aug. 30 with goals from Priscila da Silva, Scarlett Camberos, and Geyse da Silva, improving to 5-0 while pushing its season total to 28 goals. Tigres stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over Pachuca. Toluca edged León 1-0 to move to 13 points in Group A, Monterrey won 4-0 at Querétaro, and Pumas produced one of the round’s biggest results by winning 2-0 at Guadalajara.
The Contender Story: The early title picture is becoming a two-team standard: América and Tigres are both 5-0, but they are winning in different ways. América is overwhelming opponents with scoring volume, while Tigres has paired a perfect record with steadier control. Toluca is the closest pressure point in Group A.
Formula One
Formula One did not race during the Aug. 27-Sept. 2 window, but the Italian Grand Prix moved into focus. Monza hosts Round 13 from Sept. 4-6, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli will take a significant grid penalty after Mercedes elected to install a full new power unit for his home race. Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship standings with 242 points, 59 ahead of both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes leads the Constructors’ standings with 425 points, followed by Ferrari at 338 and McLaren at 263. McLaren, coming off back-to-back Lando Norris victories, also announced a rotating rear-wing update it calls the “H-Wing” for Monza.
The Contender Story: Mercedes still owns the championship advantage, but Monza gives the pursuers an unusual opening. Antonelli’s penalty puts Russell, Hamilton, and an improving Norris in position to cut into the lead if they can turn qualifying position into a clean Sunday result.
